With a love of surfing from an early age, Cameron Blair grew up surfing the waves of Freshwater Beach, on Sydney’s beautiful Northern Beaches. A Carpenter by trade, Cam also had a keen interest in board design and began to try his hand in his late teens, shaping boards in the back shed of his parents’ house.
He would often take his boards down to the guys at Aloha in Brookvale to critique, until he eventually took up a Bay in 1993, age 22, at Brandon McDonald’s Brookvale factory- where he went on to really cut his teeth over the next 10 years.
An inspired mentor, Brandon taught Cam to hand shape from scratch and allowed him to develop his creative flair and eye for detail – finishing boards for the Japanese market, producing promotional boards, and shaping custom orders for his then brand, CJB Shapes and Designs.
The late Bruce Goody was also a big influence in Cam’s shaping history, passing on everything he knew about glassing and sanding surfboards – and cementing the dream Cam had always aspired to.
Now, with over 30 years of invaluable experience under his belt, Cam has his own factory – fulfilling his life-long passion of ‘creating great boards’ – of which he says ‘there’s nothing better!’.
